Limits of sequences

Definition 13

Limit of a sequence

a(n)→La(n) \to L means: for every ε>0ε > 0 there is NN such that ∣a(n)−L∣<ε|a(n) - L| < ε for all n≥Nn \ge N.

Read the quantifiers in order: ∀ε∃N∀n≥N\forall ε \exists N \forall n \ge N. Somebody hands you an εε, however small. You must answer with an NN, which may depend on εε.

To prove a limit, begin with “Let ε>0ε > 0 be arbitrary.” Then choose NN and check the inequality.
