Two properties of functions

Definition 6

Injective

ff: A→BA \to B is injective if f(a)=f(b)⇒a=bf(a) = f(b) \Rightarrow a = b.

A function is surjective if every b∈Bb \in B equals f(a)f(a) for some a∈Aa \in A.

To prove injectivity, assume f(a)=f(b)f(a) = f(b) and show a=ba = b. To prove surjectivity, take an arbitrary bb and find an aa that maps to it.
